360 Degree Ownership

Everyone is responsible for everything. What? Yes!

We all have specific assigned accountabilities, but the Pivot community succeeds most when we all take the approach of owning features, launches, objectives, etc. to the highest degree possible.

Everyone on the team is responsible for our collective delivery of objectives.

An engineer who does only the bare minimum to get their PR merged and then moves on or a designer who emails their Figma link to engineering and then forgets it forever are not owning our collective success.

A-Player Flexibility and Collaboration

We want to recruit, hire, and retain the best people.

Flexibility means enabling diverse and individualized work-styles as much as possible, whether that refers to working hours, daily flow, minimizing meetings, work locations, time zones, focus, or pretty much anything else that doesn't inherently negatively impact the team or conflict with our other core values.

We all need to be flexible and collaborative to enable individual autonomy and team effectiveness.

This also means that folks who aren't radically productive (people who require day-to-day oversight in order to deliver, lack interpersonal skills, or don't go above and beyond relative to ownership, accountability, and delivery) do not belong on the team.

Radical Productivity

We look for candidates who love to be productive.

Most startups fail. Burnout can trigger failure, so in no sense is that desired or expected.

Many startups fail not because of over-work or outside factors though, but because of ineffective, bureaucratized, buck-passing, over-staffed, unproductive teams.

'FAANG' companies are not our model for productivity - the startups that ship faster than us are. We don't do PIPs for productivity issues nor do we accept that individual contributors will require a lot of management or peer pressure to be productive.

Politics and Social Issues

At Pivot, unless a political issue actively and immediately affects the physical atoms of our team members, we do not take a position as an organization.

Political agreement is not necessary to treat each other with respect, but respect for freedom of speech outside of the workplace is necessary to align with our internet-wide mission.

The impact of politics in the workplace generally goes against our core values, so if aligning organizational culture with personal political values is key to what you bring to the table or what you look for in an organization, Pivot is not the best fit.

Workflow

Our workflow is designed to support productivity, creativity, and individual effectiveness. We balance both synchronous and asynchronous collaboration, allowing for flexibility and efficient collaboration across time zones, using the Pivot platform. Members of our team are comfortable working on their own and are independent leaders in their own right - no daily standups or prescribed 1:1s.
