The Pivot platform is open for self-hosting and developed in public because we believe in the power of community to change the world. We build with open source tools, contribute to the open source community, and sponsor great open source projects.

A platform people rely on every day to communicate and collaborate should be transparently built and shouldn't lock users in. If we are going to be the collaboration layer for the internet, Pivot needs to be developed by the people, for the people.

Why would I pay for Pivot if the code is public? Can I host it myself?

While engineers are welcome to build and run Pivot using the source code, this is complex and may not be a good idea for individuals or organizations looking to use the platform.

We deploy, support, and update full-featured mobile and desktop apps. The source-code is publicly available, but building and deploying apps to the App Store and Google Play isn't something most people want to take on themselves, not to mention the complexity of desktop app distribution.

We financially guarantee the uptime of Pivot with a sophisticated high-availability architecture. Every component of Pivot is designed to be durable and stay online 24/7/365. This isn't the case with self-hosting Pivot.

Security

The Pivot source-code is designed for security, but many cyberattack surfaces are via deployment and hosting, not application code. Our Cloud Platform is operated following industry-standard security principles with SOC-2 compliance in-progress.

Integrated Audio and Video

Users of the Pivot Cloud Platform don't have to worry about billing for using audio and video rooms — it's included in all Pivot cloud tiers. This is not the case for self-hosting — audio and video services are separate and complex costs when self-hosting.

Collaborate across organizations

With the Pivot Cloud Platform, all users can communicate and collaborate across organizations and spaces. Want to work with someone outside your organization or allow space members to join with their existing Pivot account? This wouldn't be possible with individual, siloed instances of Pivot.

What is the license for the Pivot source code?

The Pivot platform is developed in public under the Functional Source License, allowing self-hosting under most conditions and converting to the open source Apache 2.0 license over time. Certain cloud platform features intended specifically for Pivot Technologies customers such as SAML Single-Sign-On and SCIM are licensed under the Pivot Cloud Platform License, which allows self-hosting use of cloud platform features under certain conditions. The Pivot Cloud Platform License is similar to the licenses used by other open companies to license their 'enterprise' features separate from their core products. This supports individuals and small organizations, while also enabling Pivot's mission.

Can I export my data from the Pivot Cloud Platform?

Absolutely. We're building features to enable easy self-service downloading of all Pivot data. Right now, you can download individual page, database, goal, whiteboard blocks yourself and can reach out to our support team to get a copy of all data.
